Heavy Freight Requires More Than a Rail Rate

The material, terminal, railcar, transfer system, and truck market must work together.

Sand and mineral projects are shaped by product density, gradation, moisture, dust, prior cargo, railcar type, unloading rate, stockpile or silo capacity, terminal access, truck payload, delivery radius, and shipment schedule.

A strong plan starts with the exact material and delivery market, then determines whether direct rail, an existing transload terminal, staging, storage, or a larger project-specific site deserves review.

Rail may reduce reliance on long-distance truck movement for the right lane, but cost, capacity, emissions, service, storage, and delivery benefits must be evaluated using the actual project—not a universal public multiplier.
Material Groups

Different sands and bulk materials create different equipment and terminal requirements.

Select a material group to review representative products, equipment, facility questions, and quality or project controls.

Industrial & Specialty Sand

Protect product specifications from origin through final delivery.

Silica and specialty sands used in glass, foundry, filtration, ceramics, manufacturing, and other industrial processes can require tight control of gradation, moisture, contamination, prior cargo, unloading equipment, storage, and truck delivery.

Representative products Silica, foundry sand, filtration media, glass sand, ceramic inputs, and specialty blends.
Typical equipment Covered hoppers or other approved equipment matched to product density and requirements.
Facility review Pneumatic or gravity unloading, conveyor systems, silos, covered storage, scales, and truck loadout.
Quality focus Gradation, moisture, prior cargo, cleaning, contamination control, and customer specifications.
B&H's Dedicated Sand & Bulk-Material Platform

SandTransload.com provides the customer-facing sales platform for Coopers Plains and the affiliated Emporium and Turtlepoint terminals.

Primary B&H SandTransload Terminal

Coopers Plains should be the first B&H conversation for sand and heavy bulk freight.

Located on the B&H line in Steuben County, Coopers Plains combines rail access, warehousing, dry storage, weighing, conveyors, truck loadout, utilities, and regional highway reach. B&H connects the terminal to Norfolk Southern at Painted Post.

From Origin to Regional Delivery

A bulk-material program succeeds when each transfer point is planned as one system.

01

Define the material

Exact product, grade, density, moisture limits, contamination sensitivity, annual or project volume, and forecast.

02

Match the railcar

Car type, cubic capacity, load limit, expected net payload, prior cargo, loading method, supplier, and route.

03

Select the terminal

Serving railroad, geography, unloading capability, storage or staging, truck scale, utilities, and available capacity.

04

Plan truck distribution

Payload, fleet, hours, queueing, road access, final delivery radius, jobsite requirements, and seasonal restrictions.

05

Launch and manage flow

Forecast, inbound visibility, placement, unloading, release, dwell, inventory, exceptions, billing, and performance review.

What Determines Project Fit?

The cheapest-looking line item does not always produce the best operating system.

01

Density and net payload

Product density, car volume, load limit, route, empty-car weight, actual net product, and comparable truck payload.

02

Product integrity

Gradation, moisture, prior cargo, cleaning, weather exposure, contamination control, and customer specifications.

03

Unloading throughput

Conveyors, gravity gates, pneumatic systems, mobile equipment, labor, railcar spots, operating hours, and cars per day.

04

Dust and site controls

Dust management, runoff, cleanup, containment, permits, environmental requirements, and written terminal acceptance.

05

Staging and storage

Silos, stockpiles, laydown, track capacity, railcar dwell, free time, demurrage, private-car status, and site availability.

06

Sand & Bulk Material FAQs

Common questions about terminals, railcars, storage, shale support, and project review.

01 Do I need a private siding to receive sand by rail?

No. A compatible transload terminal can receive railcars and transfer material to trucks for regional delivery. The terminal must still match the material, railcar, unloading method, storage or staging need, truck radius, permits, and available capacity.

02 Which railcar is used for sand and aggregates?

Covered hoppers are common for many dry sands and specialty minerals. Open-top hoppers, gondolas, or other cars may apply to stone, aggregate, or qualifying construction materials. The actual car depends on density, cubic capacity, load limit, weather exposure, unloading system, route, supplier, and product requirements.

03 Does every SandTransload terminal handle every product?

No. Coopers Plains, Emporium, and Turtlepoint have different infrastructure, geography, operating profiles, material fit, staging potential, and delivery markets. Product acceptance, handling, storage, capacity, and commercial terms require confirmation for the specific project.

04 Can terminal space be used for staging or storage?

Possibly, depending on the location, material, duration, site plan, available capacity, environmental requirements, operating access, and commercial arrangement. Railcars and terminal space should not be assumed to provide free or unlimited storage.

05 Can SandTransload support Marcellus and Utica supply-chain freight?

The network is positioned to evaluate sand, aggregates, building materials, steel, equipment, transformers, project freight, staging, laydown, and other energy-adjacent movements. The right terminal depends on the material, lane, project timing, handling needs, and final delivery region.

06 What information should I provide for a sand or bulk-material review?

Provide the exact material and grade, STCC when known, origin, destination, annual or project volume, shipment frequency, truck payload, likely railcar, unloading method, storage or staging need, final delivery region, desired timing, and any environmental or quality-control requirements.
